Don Camillo and Peppone are the fictional protagonists of a series of works by the Italian writer and journalist Giovannino Guareschi set in what Guareschi refers to as the "small world" of rural Italy after World War II. Most of the Don Camillo stories came out in the weekly magazine Candido, founded by Guareschi with Giovanni Mosca. A long time ago a large body of Giovannino Guareschi's Don Camillo stories were translated and published by Gollancz in the UK in conjunction with a TV series produced by the BBC and Italian national TV. I watched the series and bought the book and loved both. I still have the book but it is somewhat aged and dogeared now. Don Camillo is a character created by the Italian writer and journalist Giovannino Guareschi, whose name, and some of his character, is based on an actual Roman Catholic priest, World War II partisan and detainee at the concentration camps of Dachau and Mauthausen, named Don Camillo Valota (1912–1998).

Fortunately, don Camillo and Peppone, despite their conflicting ideologies, usually manage to apply some sort of rough justice to the situation. In terms of difficulty, there is regular use of all the various verb forms and, given the older, semi-rural setting, a good amount of less-familiar vocabulary. He was a journalist, writer, humorist. Along with Giovanni Mosca and Giaci Mondaini he founded the humorous magazine "Candido".
